Fundamentals Make You Successful

In the world of sports, all successful sports teams and the successful athletes that make up those teams are successful because of the fundamentals that they practice each and every day of the year.

An MLM distributor’s success is no different.

Perhaps you have the same experiences online that I have, in that it seems like everyone is promoting the latest secret to do this and the hidden secret behind that.

If the truth may be told, the reason that top earners in MLM/Network Marketing make six, seven, eight plus figures a year is because of the fundamentals they practice each day and not some hidden secret.

No don’t get me wrong, there is information out there that could be considered “secret” to the masses, however, once analysed, that information usually is a fundamental step in business development.

The one thing that I have learned in the 25 years that I have been part of the MLM/Network Marketing industry, fundamentals are what will drive your success whether your building your business online or traditionally.

So the formula for an MLM Distributors success is simple, yet not easy to achieve. The formula is as follows:

MLM Distributors Success = the Universal Laws of Attraction + the Law of Averages

Let us explore each of these two areas.

The Universal Laws of Attraction

The Law of Attraction as most of us know by now has been around for hundreds of years and was first published in 1879 by the New York Times.

In 1937, Napoleon Hill published his book entitled, Think and Grow Rich. Throughout the book he talks about the concept of controlling your own thoughts, as well as, the “energy” that thoughts create and their ability through this energy to attract other thoughts. I am of the opinion that what Napoleon Hill was referring to the “law of attraction” when he explained this energy of thoughts.

In 2006, the Law of Attraction became popular to the masses through Rhonda Byrne’s, “The Secret”, but became truly practical to the MLM/Network Marketing community through Mike Dillard’s, “Magnetic Sponsoring” course.

“Essentially, we are hard-wired to find other people attractive or unattractive based on the level of value they have to offer, because we gain a portion of their power/value through association.” – Mike Dillard in Magnetic Sponsoring

There have been many definitions attached to this law, but quite simply put; your thoughts coupled with your consistent actions will determine who you are and what you become. These are the type of people you will attract into your life and business.

The Law of Averages

The law of averages is a natural law and not just a term used in the science of statistics. In the MLM/Network Marketing profession, the law of averages is the law that determines the number of times a presentation is seen is in direct proportion to the number of times that that presentation is shown. In other words, the number of times a prospect becomes a distributor is in direct proportion to the number of times a business opportunity is shown to potential prospects.

So let us get back to the original formula for an MLM distributors success.

If one controls their thoughts on a daily basis and takes actions that reflects those thoughts the end result will be that you become what you have been thinking about.

Now that you have become what you are thinking about, your consistent thoughts and actions will attract the type of people who perceive value in what you have to offer.

If you attract enough people through the use of adopting the law of averages as discussed above, the end result will be a successful MLM distributor.

MLM Leadership Development

Most MLM distributors around the world don’t realize it, but the most critical factor of their succeeding in network marketing and in life is their ability to get along well with other people. It does not matter what your education level is, or the experience you have in network marketing, it doesn’t even matter how much money you are generating right now. Unless an MLM distributor develops their skills with people, they’re not going to achieve very much in business or in life.

Here is the MLM leadership landscape: No two MLM distributors are the same, every distributor is different. Each and every MLM leader has a different objective, a different temperament, a different attitude, and a different viewpoint. It goes without saying that a lot of times our differences can lead to conflict when we try to work together. Conflict can show up in a lot of ways, such as:

  • Tension
  • Fear
  • Anger
  • Lack of appreciation
  • Rejection
  • Insecurity

Conflict can be found everywhere. The critical difference is how you the MLM distributor handle conflict and especially how you handle another distributor in the midst of conflict.

Conflicts aren’t just between distributors. We’ve got conflicts inside ourselves. We’ve all got needs and desires that compete with each other. We struggle with our own feelings about our background, our inadequacies, our fears, our missed opportunities, our past mistakes.

Somehow we’ve got to develop an understanding of what goes on inside ourselves and other MLM distributors around us. We need to know how and why a distributor gets discouraged and, just as important, how they get motivated and stay motivated to accomplish great things. We need to know how distributors, including ourselves, work.

“The capacity for getting along with our neighbour depends to a large extent on the capacity for getting along with ourselves. The self-respecting individual will try to be as tolerant of his neighbour’s shortcomings as he is of his own.” – Eric Hoffer, an American social writer and philosopher.

Just beware of one thing. Don’t ever try to develop people skills so you can get your way with another MLM distributor. Instead, develop people skills in order to help other distributors and grow yourself as an individual.

Tip on how to get along with others: As an MLM leader, the first thing that you need to do is like yourself. Once you understand the following:

  • Who you are as an MLM leader
  • Why you have become the way you are as an MLM distributor
  • Why you behave in a certain way as a distributor

Then you are in a position of MLM leadership; to learn to like and accept others. When you are aware that you can change some of your attitudes while you may have to accept some others, you can relate to other MLM distributors behaviour and personalities.

As you become skilled in dealing with distributors, you’ll discover that getting along with another MLM distributor doesn’t always mean giving distributors what they want.

There are times you’ll deal with down line who’ll try to force you into a negative position and even take advantage of you if they can. People skills involve not only building positive, strong relationships, but also being firm when you need to be firm.

We’ve got to understand when to be firm and when to be gentle with an MLM distributor. Wisdom lies in knowing the difference. And we need skills in both directions.

It’s absolutely essential that we learn to get along well with other MLM distributors. More opportunities are lost because relationships fail than for any other reason. It’s not failures in technical skill or knowledge that most often destroy projects. Most of the time it’s a failure to get along with a distributor; up line, MLM leadership, etc…

That’s why MLM leaders all over the world are pouring time and money into training their down line in personal development; getting along well with other distributors. If this investment pays off for MLM leadership, think how valuable it could be for each MLM distributor as individuals.

Recommendation: Don’t leave the responsibility of learning people skills up to the MLM leadership, invest in yourself.

MLM Distributors Don’t Need to Fake it Until They Make It

Don't Fake it Until You Make It!

 

MLM distributors back when I began my MLM career in the mid 1980’s were told by their up line that in order to look successful to potential prospects they should “fake it until I make it.” I was among those MLM distributors that received this “sage” advice.

Now over the years I received a lot of advice on how to build my MLM business, some of it was absolutely life changing and some of it was downright horrible.

The advice I received about “faking it” was among some of the worst advice I have ever received.

MLM distributors are told the first action step to building your MLM business was to develop a written names list. Building your MLM business is driven solely by word of mouth, period. No advertising, no commercials, no banners ads, no flyers; building your MLM business is about one person talking to another person. Sadly a number of MLM businesses are still being run like this today.

 So MLM distributors would take out a clean sheet of paper and begin to make a list of people that they know, like family, friends and co-workers etc.

So let us look back on the original sage advice about “fake it until you make it.” An MLM distributor is armed with two pieces of information at this point, a list of his family, friends and co-workers and the sage advice of being dishonest with the people that know them the best!

Is it any wonder that this “technique” was doomed from the beginning?

Throughout the 70’s, 80’ and most of the 1990’s our industry was given a black eye by people that took this advice and took it to a whole new level.

Most people in the industry took this advice and bought things that they couldn’t afford so that they would look more successful, such as, clothes, cars and in some cases homes. Even though these MLM distributors were not making any money, they were trying to show their down line that they were through the “fake it until you make it” strategy.

Solution: As an MLM Distributor, choose positioning over “faking it” to build your MLM business.

The best way to position you as an MLM distributor with integrity is to “Master” the skills necessary to build your MLM business.

So what does it mean to “master” the skills necessary to build your MLM business?

First of all choose the number one thing that if you mastered it, your business would thrive.

So let us take for example lead generation. The best way to position you as an expert MLM distributor with integrity is to choose a lead generation strategy and work at it until you become very successful at it.

Then you are in a position as an MLM distributor to be referred to as an expert in that skill. Now you can make honest claims and people will want to work with you as a leader.

Now I am not going to tell you that are going to be easy to become an expert on a particular skill, because it will take some dedicated time and effort.

Build Your MLM Business

When I began my network marketing/MLM career in 1985, I was told that in order to build your MLM business fast and effectively, that I should talk to everyone that is outside a three foot circle of me.

Have you ever heard that being said before? Was it yesterday?

To effectively build your MLM business, you first need to treat it like a business and only hire the people that are qualified to do the job.

Twelve to fifteen years ago prior to the Internet becoming available to the home based industry, you wanted to talk to a lot of people because that was your only source of lead generation.

Now through the effective and responsible use of technology you can build your MLM business faster than at any other period in the home based industry history.

By learning how to generate your own online traffic, you take full control of your businesses destiny and alleviate the necessity to “talk to a lot to find a few.”

When you have traffic pouring into your business, you can then build your MLM business using some traditional business interview techniques.

We all have worked in an environment with people we did not like or get along with, but when you build your MLM business; you only have to work with the people that choose to work with.

When I am speaking with someone that is interested in joining my business opportunity, it is because they have been filtered through a sales funnel process, so that I am only speaking with people that are educated about the opportunity and have the desire to make it work.

Now to effectively build your MLM business, you will want to “interview” these people like you are hiring them for a multi-million dollar business position.

Why?

You only have so much time in your life to build your MLM business, so take the time upfront to “your” due diligence with each interested individual so you don’t waste that time later. You are going to invest time with people, so make sure that the time that you do invest is with the right people.

How I interview people is very similar to the way I did it back in my traditional business career.

I have designed a detailed profile of the type of person that I would like to work with, in other words, “the ideal candidate.”

To build your MLM business, you want to take the time and develop “your” idea of the ideal candidate, so that you have something to measure your prospects against.

For me, just being interested in my business opportunity is not enough; it is what allowed us to get to the talking stage.

When I set up a telephone call with a pre-qualified prospect, I let them know in advance that this will be an interview and that I am looking to work with a specific type of person.

What this immediately does is it eliminates the “hidden” tire kickers. If someone is offended or decides not to attend an interview, no problem, I have just saved a lot of time upfront.

Ultimately, how you build your MLM business is up to you, it is your business.

To build your MLM business in methodical and deliberate way is more beneficial to you in the long run, that building it fast and haphazard.
